Turkey has a rich culture and has been influenced over the centuries by Byzantines, Ionians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans and Ottomans to name a few who have all contributed to its history. There are monuments, ancient ruins and sites of historical interest throughout Turkey.
The Turkish language is part of the Ural-Altaic group and written in the Latin alphabet. There are around 150 million people who can speak Turkish worldwide. A few key phrases you may need;

Agriculture and fishing play a big part in the Turkish economy and you will notice the abundance of fresh tomatoes, cherries, pears, apples, melons, olives trees and fish whilst you travel the region. In Turkey you have the right to have your melon cut for you to taste. The vendor will make a small incision in the melon and take out a piece for you to try before you buy.

Whilst visiting Turkey you are sure to see souvenirs with the Evil Eye on. Bright blue beads decorated with an eye like design which can be found on jewellery, key rings, charms etc. The evil eye is said to ward of mental and physical harm and is a very old Turkish custom.
Shopping in Turkey is a great experience as you are expected to haggle over the price of goods. Good items to buy in Turkey are leather goods, carpets and jewellery. There are over 2000 tax free stores in Turkey. You must spend over 118YTL in any one transaction and you will be given a Global Refund Cheque. When leaving turkey have your invoices and goods available to show to the custom officials. You should get about 12% of the purchase price refunded.

Dining in Turkey is a fantastic opportunity if you are prepared to try anything. Most restaurants will offer a meze which is a mix of small dishes either hot or cold and similar to Spanish tapas. A Typical Turkish breakfast will include tomatoes, olives, cucumber, fresh bread and tea. Fresh fish is high on the Turkish menu and most places will display the days catch for you to choose from. There are a number of other Turkish delights you should try. Pide is a Turkish snack made from a flat bread with either a cheese of minced meat topping. You should also try Raki which is a drink made from grape juice and aniseed. The local way to drink this is with ice and water. Desserts are very sweet and will contain pastry, nuts and syrup or honey such as baklava. Alternatively fresh fruit is served after a meal.
