About Fethiye
The small town of Fethiye which was originally called Telmessos, Land of the Lights is a popular destination for both tourists and buyers. The old quarter of Fethiye has a traditional village feel to it and really good atmosphere. If you want a bit more nightlife there are plenty of bars, cafes and clubs to welcome you. There is a fantastic bazaar and plenty of shops around the picturesque cobbled streets. Good buys include leather goods, textiles, jewellery and local crafts as well as copies of designer bags and clothing.
The water is warm, clear and great for water sports, especially scuba diving. Boat hire is a popular option and many hire companies will charter you a boat for the day for sailing or fishing. The bay which is encased by 12 small islands adds to the fantastic setting of Fethiye in particular Kekova Island which has a mysterious sunken city.
Fethiye has many sarcophagi dotted about the town which date back to about 400BC, some of the best examples are situated outside the main government building. If you like sightseeing then Fethiye also has a number of tombs nearby the most famous being Amyntas who was the king of Fethiye in ancient times. His tomb is carved with beautiful decoration high up on a rock face. Another site of historical interest is the Crusader Fortress which is on a hill just behind Fethiye which offers great views.
Nearby is the town of Olundeniz which has a superb beach and Cold and Hot Bay. Which is exactly what it is, you can swim in the chilly water on top then dive down about a meter to warm up. This is due to a hot spring which is great for arthritis and rheumatism.
